Prints Charming

The exceptional use of Ankara and other African prints to create beautiful pieces, celebrities and powerful political figures such as America’s First Lady Michelle Obama has been spotting some fabulous looks from Nigerian designer, Duro Olowu. She has also rocked some beautiful pieces from ASOS’ Africa fairtrade collection, which is made in Mombasa and is dedicated to creating jobs and helping underprivileged communities in Kenya.

Other African designers including Suno, Jewel by Lisa and Boxing Kitten have also been seen on Hollywood A-listers such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Solange, Rihanna, Kelis, Uma Thurman and Linda Evangelista.

Who ever thought the time would come when Hollywood celebrities will all be clamouring for a piece of the African Inspired pieces. Designers such as Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B spring/summer 2011 collection where she took a quick trip to the mother land for some inspiration. The collection had tribal looking African- inspired prints with African- inspired accessories such as beads, bangles and the noir Masaai inspired sobat necklaces as seen on celebrities Kelis and Solange.

Beyonce’s House of Deron and Burberry Prorsum spring/summer 2012 collections all had African Inspired pieces. Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was recently seen rocking an Ankara print trench coat from Burberry Prorsum spring/summer 2012 collection.

The African Inspired creativity trend has also made its way into interiors design and furnishings and recently into high street stores such as Aldo who designed a range of African print swedges.

The prints have become a fashion favourite and have made their way to the grand catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris. It’s time for you too to catch on this trend, looks like it’s here to stay for a long time!
